Tarehe 10 ya mwezi Septemba, siku moja tu kabla ya Kumbukumbu ya Septemba 11, siku ambayo dunia nzima inakumbuka maadhimisho ya miaka 10 ya Septemba 11, Zanzibar ilipata Maafa ya kihistoria.

Jina langu ni SABRY, muathirika wa maafa ya kusikitisha ya MV Spice katika visiwa vya Zanzibar ambayo siku ya tarehe 9 Ijumaa ambapo meli hii, kwa kweli si meli ni Ferry tu ambayo imesajiliwa kubeba mizigo kutoka Zanzibar tu kwa sababu ya Usajili wake wa kazi katika Dare salaam, Tanzania ilikuwa imezuliwa na SUMATRA, Mamlaka ambayo inasimamia Usafiri wa Nchi Kavu na baharini Tanzania Bara kwa Sababu ya Hali Yake ya Usalam ana Kiufundi.

Nini kilichotokea. . . .? "Baada ya kuadhimisha kumalizika kwa Mwezi wa Ramadhani, Nilikuwa na ndoto mbaya juu ya familia yangu, na kwa sababu mke Wangu alipanga kusafiri, nilikuwa na wasiwasi sana kuhusu safari hii." Alisema Sabry.

Ni Utamaduni hapa Zanzibar kwamba, wakati familia inafunga ndoa ni lazima wanafamilia wote wa Familia wahudhurie na kutoa baraka kwa Bwana Harusi na bibi Harusi na kuwaaga. Kwa sababu ya mila hii nilitoa ruhusa kwa mke wangu kuhudhuria sherehe huko Matuuni Pemba, Kisiwa Cha Pili cha Zanzibar akiwa na Wifi Yake, Amina Mmanga na mtoto wake Mariam.

Nilifanya Maandalizi yote kwa ajili ya safari hii ikiwa ni pamoja na kuandamana naye mpaka Bandarini lakini sikuweza kupata fursa ya kumpeleka hadi ndani kwa sababu hali ilikuwa mbaya kwani eneo la bandari kulikua na wasafiri wapatao 3,000 ambao wote wanataka kupanda ndani ya Meli hio. Nilimkabidhi mke wangu kwa Kaka yake ili amsaidie apande Ndani ya Boti, Sikujua kumbe Niliyakabidhi Maisha yake kwa Mungu.

Safari Iipoaanza . . . .
Meli ilianza Safari yake kutoka Dare salaam, siku ya Ijumaa tarehe 9 Lakini Ripoti zisizothibitishwa zinasema kuwa, meli ilikuwa imebeba mizigo na abiria zaidi ya uwezo wake na hii iliwafanya SUMATRA kuingilia kati na kuidhuia meli mpaka baadhi ya Mizigo iliposhushwa. Mabaharia Walishusha baadhi ya mizigo hadi SUMATRA waalipokubaliana na Hali hio na Kuruhusu Meli kuondoka.

MV Spice iliwasili Kisiwani Zanzibar siku hio hio jioni na abiria wapatao 300 (watoto wachanga na Wanaoingia bila ya Tiketi hawajahesabiwa) na ukadiriaji wa Abiria zaidi ya 100 ambawo hawakuwa katika Orodha ya meli. Moja ya tatu tu ya wasafiri kutoka Dare salaam walimaliza safari yao katika Bandari ya Zanzibar na inakadiriwa watu kati ya 200-250 walibaki ndani na Meli kwa Safari inayofuatiya, Safari ya Pemba.

Safari ya Pemba Ikaanza.
MV Spice ilikuwa tayari na Wasafiri 350 na mizigo ambayo ni pamoja na chuma, Ngano, Mchele, Saruji na magari, inakadiriwa Mzigo tu ulikua Tani 500!.

Usalama wala Meli mara nyingi unaweza kuathiriwa na hali ya hewa mbaya , Bahari Chafu, Kugongana na Chombo chengine au miamba. Aidha, kanuni za Bahari zinataka Nahodha na Baharia kulinda usalama wa Abiria wao ikiwemo kufuata kanuni zote za usafiri wa Baharini kama Kujaza kwa Idadi na Kuwa na Makoti ya Kuogelea kutokana na Namba ya abiria waliochukua ama zaidi.

Katika Mamlaka ya Bandari Zanzibar Meli iliruhusiwa kubeba watu 610 ambao walikua Wasafiri Wapya kwa mujibu wa Orodha ya meli ikiwa ni pamoja na watoto zaidi ya 400 ambawo hawakuonyeshwa katika Orodha ya Meli sababu waliruhusiwa kupanda meli bila tiketi. Tunasema zaidi ya watoto 400 kwa sababu ni Mila na Silka hapa Zanzibar kwa watoto kusafiri na kwenda kula Sikukuu ya Eid na Familia zao maana Shule pia huwa zimefungwa kwa Kipindi kirefu. Pia kuna idadi ya Abiria wengi ambao hawakukata Tiketi walipigwa Mihuri Mikononi na Idadi yao haijulikani.

Hivyo jumla ya idadi ya wasafiri waliopanda Boti hii Inakadiriwa kuwa kati ya 1500 – 2500.

Wakati wa kuondoka Bandarini Zanzibar kuna baadhi ya Abiria wametoa Ushuhuda kua walipoona Meli imejaa sana walishuka na Jamaa zao lakini Mabaharia walipoona hivyo kwa tamaa ya Biashara waliwazuia wasitoke wengine wanasema waliwazuia wasitoke maana ingeanzisha vurugu na Meli ilikua imeshaanza kuyumba wakati bado ipo Bandarini! .Pia walipoanza kuiondoa Meli ilianza kuyumba na wakaamua kuirudisha tena Bandarini na Kuitazama Tatizo Kisha walipoona haiyumbi tena, Haoooo wakaanza Safari ya Pemba.Kawaida inachukua masaa Nane Mpaka Kumi Kufika Pemba.Kuna Ripoti zisizothibitishwa kua hata Mmiliki wa Meli aliaambiwa kuhusu hatari kama Nahodha angeondoa Meli, ila baada ya kushauriana na Wenzako Wakasema, "Haya Ombeni Mungu" na Safari ikaanza,Kilisema Chanzo hiki cha Habari.

Mpaka sasa Ripoti za Serikali ya Zanzibar zinasema Abiria waliosajiliwa na meli hio ni 610 Lakini cha Kujiuliza, Ni hao hao waliotangaza watu waliookolewa ni 619 na Maiti zilizopatikana ni 202, Je, Wanajua Hesabu vizuri hawa!

Baada ya Juhudi binafsi ya Wabunge, Hadi sasa watu wafuatao hawajulikani Walipo, Kojani (108) Ole (157) Micheweni (88) Magogoni (184) Wete (149) Gando (418) Mtambwe (214) na Konde (96)Jumla watu ambao inaaminika waliku katika meli hii na hawajapatikana ni 1,596,Sasa tukijumlisha na Maiti (202) na waliookolewa (619) Jumla ya watu waliokuemo ni (2,214) Kwenye Meli iliyosajiliwa Kuchukua Mizigo na abiria wachache.

Kwenye mahojiano rasmi na Shirika la Utangazaji la Tanzania (TBC), Muheshimiwa Hamad Masoud (Engineer) Waziri wa Usafiri Zanzibar alisema kuwa, kati ya sababu ya ajali hii ni kwamba Wazanzibari wana mila ya kusafiri kwa makundi na Kifamilia, watoto wengi, na wanaweza kupanda melini hata kama itajaa vipi, Alisisitiza kuwa Serikali ina sehemu yake ya kuhakikisha Ajali kama hii kamwe haitokei tena.

Ukitaka kuona sura halisi za wabunge wa Tanzania gusa posho zao, huo ndio msimamo wao wa miaka na miaka na jana ulijidhihirisha kufuatia ushauri wa Waziri Kivuli wa Fedha, Zitto Kabwe, wa kutaka kufutwa kwa posho za vikao kwa wabunge katika bajeti ya serikali ya mwaka 2011/2012.

Jana baadhi ya wabunge hasa wa Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), walipinga kwa nguvu zao zote mapendekezo ya Zitto ya kutaka posho za vikao wanazolipwa ziondolewe.

Wa kwanza kupinga mapendekezo hayo bila hata kutafuna maneno alikuwa ni Mbunge wa Manyoni Mashariki (CCM), John Chiligati, ambaye alisema kama wabunge wa kambi ya upinzani hawataki kuzipokea fedha hizo waziache.

Chiligati alitoa msimamo huo jana jijini Dar es Salaam, alipotakiwa kutoa maoni yake kama anaona kuna haja posho za wabunge kuondolewa kama ilivyopendekezwa na Naibu kiongozi wa kambi ya upinzani bungeni, Zitto Kabwe.

Akizungumza na NIPASHE katika viwanja vya ofisi za Bunge jijini Dar es Salaam, Chiligati ambaye pia ni Naibu Katibu Mkuu wa CCM (Bara), alisema hoja hiyo sio ya wabunge wote bali ya upinzani na hivyo kama wao wanaona hawazihitaji posho hizo wasizichukue.

“Hii kambi ya upinzani kama haitaki hailazimishwi kupokea posho hizo za vikao wanaweza kuziacha sio lazima wazipokee,” alisema.

Naye Mbunge wa Magomeni visiwani Zanzibar, Mohammad Chomboh (CCM), alisema suala hilo halitekeleziki kwa kuwa Sh. 80,000 anayolipwa mbunge kama posho ni ndogo ikilinganishwa na hali halisi ya maisha ilivyo sasa.

Alisema kulala nyumba ya wageni kwa siku wanapokuwa Dodoma ni Sh. 50,000 hapo bado hawajala hivyo kiasi hicho sio kikubwa kama inavyoelezwa na upinzani.

Mbunge wa Bukoba Vijijini, Jasson Rweikiza (CCM), alisema hoja ya kutaka posho ifutwe ni mawazo ya mtu kwani waliopanga malipo ya posho hiyo nao pia wana sababu zao.

Hata hivyo, alimtaka mbunge yeyote mwenye hoja kama hiyo, aipeleke bungeni ikajadiliwe huko, badala ya kuizungumzia nje ya Bunge.

Mbunge wa Nzega (CCM), Dk. Hamisi Kigwangalla, alisema haungi mkono hoja ya Zitto, kwa vile imejaa unafiki na kujitafutia umaarufu.

“Kama kweli tuna dhamira ya msingi ya kutumikia Watanzania kuna vitu vingi vilipaswa viondolewe na si posho peke yake. Kwa mfano, mashangingi yangefutwa kwa sababu yana gharama kubwa kuendesha.

Lakini yanahitajika kwa wabunge kutumia kuwafikia wananchi vijijini,” alisema Dk. Kigwangalla.

Alisema posho za vikao, ambazo Zitto anataka zifutwe, ni ndogo kulinganisha na majukumu yanayomkabili mbunge.

Dk. Kigwangalla alisema hata shida binafsi za wananchi, wanategemea zitatuliwe na mbunge, hivyo ni vigumu mbunge kufanya kazi bila kulipwa posho.

“Vinginevyo wanataka mbunge arudi mitaani kuganga njaa. Kwa hiyo, hiyo ni kauli ya unafiki, ya wanasiasa wanaotafuta umaarufu, mimi siwezi kuiunga mkono,” alisema Dk. Kigwangalla.

Kwa sasa mbunge analipwa Sh. 70,000 kwa siku kwa ajili ya kujikimu pamoja na Sh. 80,000 kama posho ya kikao kwa siku ambapo jumla analipwa Sh. 150,000 mbali na mshahara wake.

Kwa upande wake, mbunge wa viti maalum (CCM), Dk. Maua Daftari alipoulizwa kuhusu hoja hiyo hakuwa na jibu la kutoa.

Badala yake mbunge huyo alibaki anaguna na kukata simu bila ya kuiunga mkono ama kuikataa hoja hiyo.

Akitoa maoni yake, Ali Khamis Seif mbunge wa jimbo la Mkoani (CUF), alisema hoja ya kutaka posho ziondolewe ni nzuri lakini kwa sasa bado sio wakati wake.

Alisema mbunge ana kazi nyingi za kuwasaidia wananchi hivyo ikiwa ataondolewa posho watashindwa kutatua kero mbalimbali za wananchi.

Hata hivyo alisema ikiwa fedha hizo zitaondolewa kwa mbunge ziingizwe kwenye mfuko wa jimbo ili zisaidie kusukuma mbele maendeleo ya wananchi.

Alitoa mfano kuwa kuna wabunge wengine wanatumia fedha hizo kuwasaidia wapiga kura wao kupata elimu pamoja na kupata matibabu kazi ambayo ingepaswa kufanywa na serikali.

Akizungumzia hoja hiyo, mbunge wa viti maalum (CCM), Diana Chilolo, alisema Zitto ana mtazamo finyu juu ya hoja hiyo ya kutaka posho ya vikao iondolewe. Alisema fedha anayoipata mbunge sio ya kwake pekee bali inawasaidia wananchi wengine wakiwemo yatima, walemavu, wajane katika kupata mahitaji yao.

Kila anapokuwa mbunge wananchi wake wanamuona kama nguzo na kimbilio lao, hivyo posho hizo zinasaidia kutatua matatizo madogo madogo kama hayo.

Mbunge wa jimbo la Meatu (Chadema), Meshack Opulukwa, akitoa maoni yake alisema bado anatafakari hoja hiyo.

Aliongeza kuwa hoja hiyo aliisikia jana, lakini kama Waziri Kivuli wa Kilimo, Chakula na Ushirika bado anaitafakari ili kuona kama ataiunga mkono hoja hiyo itakapopelekwa bungeni.

Mbunge wa Muhambwe (NCCR-Mageuzi), Felix Mkosamali, aliunga mkono hoja ya Zitto ya kutaka wabunge wasiwe wanalipwa posho za vikao.

Mkosamali alisema si posho tu, bali anataka pia mishahara wanayolipwa wabunge pia ipungue na kuwa chini ya ile wanayolipwa hivi sasa kwani hatua hiyo itasaidia kudhibiti mafisadi kuwania ubunge.

“Hatuhitaji watu wagombee kwa ajili ya kupata posho, maana kuna watu huwa wanagombea kwa lengo la kutafuta maslahi binafsi na si kuwawakilisha Watanzania, hivyo posho ikiondolewa na mishahara ikapunguzwa waroho wa madaraka watapungua” alisema Mkosamali.

Aliongeza: “Kwa hiyo, naunga mkono hoja ya kufutwa posho. Lakini mishahara ya wabunge pia ipungue, maana haiwezekani posho zipungue wakati mishahara iko palepale,” alisema. Mkosamali alisema kufutwa kwa posho kwa wabunge ni hatua muhimu kwani kuna maeneo mengi ya kijamii, kama vile hospitali, fedha hizo zinaweza kupelekwa kusaidia.

Alisema pia kupunguzwa kwa mishahara ya wabunge, ni muhimu kwani kutasaidia kuwafanya wanaotaka kuwania ubunge, kufanya hivyo kwa lengo la kuwawakilisha wananchi kwa dhati.

Mbunge wa Kigoma Kusini (NCCR-Mageuzi), David Kafulila, naye pia aliunga mkono kufutwa kwa posho za vikao kwa wabunge, lakini alishauri posho hizo zibaki kwa vikao vya watumishi wasio na mishahara, kama vile wenyeviti wa vijiji.

“Mtumishi yeyote alipwe posho ya vikao, ambavyo sio sehemu ya majukumu yake,” alisema Kafulila.

Hata hivyo, alisema malipo ya posho za vikao, yasiishie tu kufutwa kwa wabunge, bali yafutwe serikalini na kwenye mahakama pia.

“Hatupaswi kulipwa kwa kukaa. Pesa nyingi inavuja. Mfumo wa sitting allowance (posho za vikao) must end (ikomeshwe),” alisema Kafulila.

Alisema pia posho nyingine zote zinapaswa kutozwa kodi na suala hilo liwe ni utaratibu na sera kwa mihimili yote ya dola; Bunge, Serikali na Mahakama.

Mbunge wa Kilwa Kaskazini (CCM), Murtaza Mangungu, aliunga mkono si kufutwa tu kwa posho za vikao kwa wabunge, bali hata mishahara nayo pia ifutwe akisema kazi ya ubunge haitakiwi malipo.

“Mimi maoni yangu ni kwamba, kwa kazi ya ubunge, wabunge hawapaswi kabisa kulipwa hata mshahara, ikifanyika hivyo itawafanya watu kujikita zaidi katika kuwatumikia wananchi,” alisema Mangungu.

Kwa upande wake, mbunge wa Mpanda mjini (Chadema), Said Arf aliunga mkono hoja hiyo ya Zitto na kusema kuwa umefika wakati wabunge kuwajali wananchi wenzao kwa kukubali kuachia posho zao ili ziweze kuwasaidia.

Aliwataka viongozi kupunguza anasa ili fedha hizo zisaidie watu wenye mahitaji ya lazima ikiwemo kuwapatia maendeleo.

Alisema mfumo unaotumiwa na Bunge wa kusema “ndiyoooo au hapanaaa” katika kupitisha hoja mbalimbali haufai kwa kuwa huo ni mfumo wa kijima.

Aliongeza kuwa hoja hiyo ya kutaka posho hizo ziondolewe inaweza kukwamishwa kwa kutumia mfumo huo wa upigaji kura kwa kusema ndiyo au hapana.

Juzi Zitto ambaye pia ni Mbunge wa Kigoma Kaskazini (Chadema) na Naibu Katibu Mkuu wa chama hicho, alisema haoni sababu mbunge kuendelea kulipwa posho nono kwa ajili ya kuhudhuria vikao kwa kuwa hiyo ni sehemu ya kazi yao ya kila siku.

Alisema anataka sheria ya Bunge inayotoa mwanya kwa wabunge kulipwa posho hizo ibadilishwe haraka ili kiasi hicho cha fedha kitumike kwa ajili ya kuwasaidia Watanzania wengine wenye matatizo.

Zitto alisema ingawa suala hilo ni gumu, lakini ataliwasilisha katika mkutano wa Bunge la bajeti wakati atakapowasilisha bajeti yake kama Waziri Kivuli wa Fedha na Uchumi.

Alisema ana imani wabunge wenzake watakubali pendekezo hilo na kumuunga mkono kubadilisha sheria hiyo ili posho hizo zisiwe zinatolewa.

Katika Bunge lililopita aliyekuwa Mbunge wa Karatu, Dk. Willibroad Slaa (Chadema), aliwahi kutoa wazo kama hilo pamoja na kupendekeza mshahara wa wabunge upunguzwe kwa kuwa ni mkubwa, lakini wabunge wenzake walipinga hoja hiyo kwa nguvu zote.

Dk. Slaa alishindwa kupitisha hoja yake katika Bunge lililopita baada ya wenzake kukataa kumuunga mkono huku baadhi yao wakitoa kauli za kumkejeli na kumuona kama mtu aliyekuwa akitafuta umaarufu wa kisiasa. Kiutaratibu wabunge wote hulipwa posho ya vikao ya Sh. 80,000 kwa siku, na posho ya kujikimu kwa kuwa nje makazi ya Sh. 70,000 hivyo kwa siku moja tu wabunge hulipwa wastani wa Sh. 150,000 siku za kazi, wakati mwishoni mwa wiki hulipwa Sh. 70,000, kwa maana hiyo kati ya wabunge wote waliopo ambao ni 350 kama posho hizo zitaondolewa serikali itaokoa kiasi cha Sh. milioni 52.5 kwa siku.

Kiasi hicho kikiongozewa Sh. milioni 490 za posho ya kujikimu ya mwishoni mwa wiki ambazo ni kwa siku 20, serikali itakuwa inaokoa jumla Sh. bilioni 3.01 ambazo ni posho za wabunge bila mshahara.

Kiasi hicho kinaweza kuelekezwa kutunisha bajeti ya elimu, barabara au afya, ambako kuna upungufu mkubwa wa fedha.

Mshahara wa mbunge kwa sasa ni Sh. milioni 2.5, kiasi hicho kikichanganywa na posho ya mafuta, kuendesha ofisi mapato yake ya ubunge yanafika kiasi cha Sh. milioni 7.19.

Serikali inatarajia kutumia Sh. trilioni 12.8 kwa mwaka wa fedha wa 2011/2012, kati ya hizo Sh. trilioni 8.8 ni kwa matumizi ya kawaida, yaani posho na mishahara na ulaji mwingine, wakati fungu la maendeleo ni Sh. trilioni nne tu.

Utaratibu wa kupitisha bajeti ya ulaji umekuwa ni utamaduni wa taifa hili, kwani hata mwaka huu wa fedha unaomalizika serikali ilipitisha bajeti ya Sh. trilioni 11.6, kati yake Sh. trilioni 7.7 zilikuwa kwa fungu la kawaida na Sh. trilioni 3.8 kwa ajili ya maendeleo.

Adebayor hails Mourinho effect

Emmanuel Adebayor has hailed the impact Jose Mourinho has had on his game since his loan move to Real Madrid.

The Manchester City striker moved to the Spanish capital last month in a deal running to the end of the season.

The La Liga giants will then have an option to sign the 26-year-old on a permanent basis.

Adebayor, who had been pushed to the fringes of the City squad, has already scored twice for his new club, netting in wins over Sevilla and Real Sociedad.

"I'm very happy for scoring two goals," Adebayor told a press conference in Madrid.

"I will work hard every day to help win our games.

"It is very easy to work with Mourinho. He is an excellent person and he enhances my game.

"He has his own way of dealing with people. He tells you what he expects you to do."

The change of scenery looks to have sparked an upturn in the Togolese striker's fortunes, and the presence of several English-speaking team-mates has allowed him to settle.

"I want to thank my team-mates for helping me adapt so easily to this league championship.

"Granero, Ramos, Ronaldo, Pepe, Marcelo... They all speak English, so they understand me and I understand them. I am very happy to be here."

Real Madrid are seven points behind leaders Barcelona in the Spanish top flight, but Adebayor vowed: "We will fight to the end to win every title."

Frank Lampard will captain England for their international friendly in Denmark on Wednesday, Fabio Capello has confirmed.

The Chelsea midfielder will lead his country out for the first time in Copenhagen in the absence of injured regular skipper Rio Ferdinand and usual understudy Steven Gerrard, who captained England during their World Cup campaign last summer.

Lampard has struggled with injuries which have kept him out of the England set-up since August, but manager Fabio Capello is confident it is the perfect time to hand the 32-year-old the armband.

"I think it's a good moment," said Capello ahead of the Denmark clash. "Probably he's fresher than the other players.

"I spoke with him about injuries that he suffered. I've monitored him during the last five games that he's played.

"I saw him play against Liverpool, he played a really good game."

Lampard, who will win his 84th cap for England against Denmark, says captaining his country will fulfil a boyhood dream.

"I'm very proud. I'm a very proud man," he said.

"I've been in the squad quite a long time now and I've waited patiently and it's going to be one of the proudest moments of my career to lead out the lads.

Tevez committed to City

Carlos Tevez has reaffirmed his commitment to Manchester City by saying 'I don't think anyone loves the shirt more than me'.

The Argentine star's future at Eastlands looked in doubt earlier this season after he handed in a transfer request.

Tevez went on to withdraw the request after holding talks with the club's hierarchy over his future.

The former Manchester United star has been in sparking form for City this season bringing his tally to 20 goals for the campaign with a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over West Brom.

Tevez insists he is now content to stay at City after a spell where he seemed anxious to leave Eastlands.

"I never walked out of the club or wanted to do any harm to the club, not for anything in the world, " Tevez told the club's official website.

Sir Alex Ferguson has given his seal of approval to Ryan Giggs being named the club’s greatest ever player. Madiba discharged from hospital

Former president Nelson Mandela was discharged from the Milpark hospital in Johannesburg on Friday, his grandson said.

"My grandfather has been discharged and we as a family will make the necessary arrangements for him to go back to his home in Houghton," Mandla Mandela told a media briefing at Milpark Hospital.

There was no "anxiety" among the family over the international icon's health, he said.

"We have always given support to him as a family.

"We have always enjoyed his sense of humour.... He continues to display that sense of humour."

Mandela is "well", said Acting President Kgalema Motlanthe.

"Madiba is well... and that should reassure all of us. There is no need to panic... to fear for his health," Motlanthe said.

The former president was admitted to hospital on Wednesday.

Mandela recently developed an acute respiratory infection, said SA National Defence Force Surgeon-General Lieutenant-General Vejaynand Ramlakan.

"He received treatment and has responded very well.... He is stable, but will be monitored closely."

Motlanthe said Mandela was receiving the best treatment from health professionals.

"From now on we will keep you posted," he said, adding that the situation could have "been handled differently".

He was referring to the news blackout on Mandela's condition.

"Nelson Mandela is not only a South African icon, [but] an icon of the entire world."

Motlanthe said he had visited Mandela prior to the briefing.

"When I walked in, his exact words [were] he was very happy to see me," he said, adding that Mandela urged him to attend the conference.

"He said: 'Look, I will not detain you any longer'.... He's in good spirits, teasing [his wife Graca Machel]," Motlanthe said.

He thanked South Africans for their prayers and well wishes.

"The Mandela family, together with government and the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Madiba himself, would like to convey appreciation to all South Africans... and people across the world who have sent words and support... for Madiba's speedy recovery and their prayers."

Mandela's aide Zelda la Grange attended the conference in a cramped boardroom, packed with reporters.

It's Official: Ian McKellen to Return as Gandalf in 'The Hobbit'

Ian McKellen has signed on to return as wizard Gandalf in "The Hobbit," the two-pic adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel being directed by Peter Jackson.

The dealmaking on Hobbit for a slew of Jackson veterans from his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy has been coming fast and furious and comes on the heels of Andy Serkis finally inking his deal to reprise Gollum.

"The Hobbit" book introduced Gandalf and Gollum, with both characters going on to become part of literature's most popular characters. Gandalf sets the adventure going in the story and appears throughout the novel. Gollum appears in a chapter that has gone on to be one of the most memorable in all of fantasy literature.

Elijah Wood signed his deal to return as Frodo last week, and Cate Blanchett will play Galadriel once again. Orlando Bloom has an offer to return as elf archer Legolas, though it's too early to tell if a deal will be made.

McKellen, who was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Gandalf, has spent recent years doing mostly voice work for film and TV, although he did star in the remake of AMC's "The Prisoner." His last major film role was in 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand."

Conviction, the “inspirational true story” movie

Fox Searchlight has released the trailer for Tony Goldwyn‘s Conviction, the “inspirational true story” of Betty Anne Waters (played by Hilary Swank), “a high school dropout who spent nearly two decades working as a single mother while putting herself through law school, tirelessly trying to beat the system and overturn her brother’s unjust murder conviction.” Sam Rockwell plays her brother, and the supporting cast includes Minnie Driver, Melissa Leo, Peter Gallagher, and Juliette Lewis. Seems like they took the Erin Brokovich formula, combining an inspirational true story with some great Academy Award winning and nominated actors. The voice over is a bit much, and the musical cue from Avatar is a bit distracting (yes, I know its originally from The Island…), but overall it looks like it could be a good film.

ROME — Teenage Manchester United striker Federico Macheda was training with Sampdoria on Friday while waiting for his proposed loan move to be finalised, Italian press reported.
Macheda is hoping to be available for Sunday's home clash against Roma, one of the teams from the city where he was born, although the 19-year-old came through Lazio's youth programme before joining United in 2007.

However, should the paperwork not be completed in time, Macheda could then make his debut a week later against his former club at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

LA Galaxy are 'open to the idea' of David Beckham's loan move this month but 'only if their terms are agreed', according to Sky Sports News sources.

Tottenham are believed to be in pole position to sign Beckham and the former England captain favours a move to a London club.
It is understood LA Galaxy's terms are financially-related but the club have yet to make any public statement about Beckham.

Desai also revealed that Rovers had made attempts to sign David Beckham, 35, on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy.

Beckham has been the subject of much transfer speculation, with several Premier League clubs waiting to hear whether LA Galaxy will release the former England captain on a loan deal during the Major League Soccer off-season.

The MLS season resumes on 15 March, meaning the ex-Manchester United midfielder would be available to play up to 11 games on a short-term deal.

Keeping an Open Mind For New Product Development

In order to sustain growth in the face of stiff competition, most companies find they have little choice but to continually find new products. For some companies, this means looking for products outside the organization, such as by purchasing or licensing products created by other companies.

However, for the vast majority of firms, the search for new products is an ongoing internal process requiring a collaborative effort involving potentially hundreds of employees from different functional areas such as research and development, business operations, finance, and, of course, marketing.

Yet, even with a dedicated development plan in place, most companies will discover in-house efforts for creating new products are risky. The success rate for new product development is often quite low, with very few ideas actually reaching the testing stage. But, some companies find failure is sometimes a good thing. How can this be?

Well, sometimes failure of one idea leads to success for another idea. This can occur when the marketer is looking for one type of product only to find another product has evolved. Some examples of products that were not part of the original product development idea phase are found in this story. Among the products discussed are Kleenex, Kotex, Ivory Soap, Popsicle and Zout.

Australian floods 'to last weeks'

Devastating flood waters across the Australian state of Queensland may not recede for weeks, the state's Premier Anna Bligh has warned.

More than 20 towns in Queensland have been cut off or flooded, with more than 200,000 people affected.Military aircraft are flying supplies into Rockhampton, which has been isolated by the still-rising waters.The authorities have now confirmed three deaths caused by flood waters in the past few days.

Ms Bligh has recalled ministers from holidays for crisis talks to plan the response to the flooding.

"Given the scale and size of this disaster, and the prospect that we will see waters sitting potentially for a couple of weeks, we will continue to have major issues to deal with throughout January," she said

Her concern was echoed earlier by Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, saying: "This is a major natural disaster and recovery will take a significant amount of time.

"The extent of flooding being experienced by Queensland is unprecedented and requires a national and united response."

Approximately 850,000 sq km have been affected, an area equivalent in size to France and Germany.

The comments come as the city of Rockhampton became cut off by waters spilling from the still-swelling Fitzroy River, leading many of its inhabitants to flee.

"Rockhampton is now completely stranded - a town of 75,000 people - no airport, rail or road," Ms Bligh told ABC radio late on Monday.

With the last route into Rockhampton cut, three Australian Defence Force helicopters will provide the city's only lifeline for food and medical supplies.

"The worst [is] still to come in communities like Rockhampton. Supplying them with food, ensuring that we keep them safe during this flood is absolutely critical," Ms Bligh said.

The water level in the Fitzroy River is expected to peak at 9.4m late on Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Australian Red Cross executive director Greg Goebel said that police were enforcing evacuations in a number of suburbs.

Rockhampton Mayor Brad Carter said about 40% of the city could be affected, and residents may have to wait at least two weeks before being able to return home.

Kay Becker, chief executive of Capricorn Helicopter Rescue, told the BBC: "People are seeing water in places that they've never ever seen it before, it's very high water, the water's running very fast, and you know, if you play with water the water will win and you will come off second best, and thankfully most people have, it seems, have heeded that warning."

Arsenal host Chelsea in a top-of-the-table derby six-pointer Today

With Manchester United easily beating Sunderland on Boxing Day, Arsenal are now five points behind the league leaders, while Chelsea are six points adrift.
Both are desperate to keep up with the title pace, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger describing the clash as a 'must-win game', while Chelsea counterpart Carlo Ancelotti has declared: "We don't want that gap (to United) to widen, so it's important to obtain an important result in this game."
History is on Chelsea's side, with the Blues having won the last five clashes between the pair, the latest a 2-0 triumph at Stamford Bridge in October.

The Blues have also won on their last three trips to the Emirates, where Arsenal have been less than convincing already this term, being beaten by Premier League newcomers West Brom and Newcastle, as well as arch rivals Spurs.

Leonardo replaces Rafael Benitez as Inter Milan coach

Inter Milan have appointed 41-year-old former AC Milan boss Leonardo to succeed Rafael Benitez as coach.

Brazilian World Cup winner Leonardo will take up the reins on 29 December and his contract runs until June 2012.
Benitez was sacked after six months in the job after asking the Inter board to back him in the transfer market.

"We believe Leonardo has the class and experience of a champion and his mentality will get the team together to get results," Inter's website read.
Leonardo's only previous managerial experience came at Inter's rivals AC Milan last season.Inter appointed Benitez after former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho moved to Real Madrid having guided the Nerazzurri to the Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cup Treble.
The Italian giants turned to Benitez after his six-year reign as Liverpool manager came to an end in June.

Rafa Benitez's departure from Inter Milan has been confirmed by the European champions.

The former Liverpool manager's exit from Giuseppe Meazza was revealed by Sky Sports News HD on Tuesday evening and has now been rubber-stamped by the club.

An agreement has been reached between the Serie A side and the Spaniard to terminate his contract with immediate effect after just six months at the helm.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Inter Milan and Rafael Benitez can announce that they have reached a mutually satisfactory agreement for the early termination of his contract.

"Inter thank Rafael Benitez for his work in leading his team to success in the Italian Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup."

Benitez was handed the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Jose Mourinho after the former Chelsea chief secured an unprecedented treble of the UEFA Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia titles.

Inter Milan have parted company with manager Rafael Benitez just over six months after appointing the Spaniard.

The move follows Benitez asking for backing from the board to buy players following the Serie A side's Club World Cup win over TP Mazembe last Saturday.
A statement on Inter's website said "a mutually satisfactory agreement for the early termination of his [Benitez's] contract" had been agreed.

Benitez took over from Jose Mourinho at the San Siro in June.
Mourinho, who left for Real Madrid, led Inter to the Serie A title, the Italian Cup and the Champions League glory last season and left his successor with a hard act to follow.

Weather disrupts sport once again

The freezing conditions across Britain have once again led to the postponement of a host of weekend sporting fixtures.

Saturday's Premier League games at Arsenal, Liverpool, Birmingham and Wigan, and Sunday's matches at Chelsea and Blackpool have been postponed.

Four Championship games are also off, as are all League One and Two games except Exeter v Sheffield Wednesday. Scottish games at Aberdeen, Hamilton, St Johnstone and Rangers are off while rugby union and horse racing are hit.

Elsewhere in Scotland, the First Division matches at Queen of the South, Raith and Ross County have fallen foul of the weather along with a host of games from the lower leagues.
The Blue Square Bet Premier League game between Luton and York was abandoned after 55 minutes due to the snow.

Saturday's race meetings at Ascot, Newcastle, Lingfield and Haydock and Sunday's at Carlisle have also been postponed.
