VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today the acquisition of midfielder Nizar Khalfan from Tanzanian club Moro United for an undisclosed financial amount, as well as the signing of Nigerian defender Michael Ndubuisi Onwatuegwu - simply known as Michael. The Whitecaps have also acquired defender Nadir Haroub on loan from Tanzanian club Young Africans FC. All three players have been registered to the Whitecaps United Soccer Leagues (USL) Premier Development League (PDL) team for the remainder of the season, plus an option for 2010.
Khalfan, 21-years-old, joins the Whitecaps after playing the 2008-09 Tanzanian Premier League season with Moro United. A talented midfielder, Khalfan spent the 2007-08 season in the Middle East with Al Tadamon of the Kuwaiti Premier League. The youngster has also had a successful international career, which includes one game-winning goal in five FIFA World Cup qualifying matches for Tanzania. The 5-foot-7, 150-pound native of Mtwara, Tanzania, also scored the match winner during an historic 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso at the Tanzania National Main Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Michael, 22, joins the Whitecaps after playing with Persiba Bantul of the Indonesian Premier Division from 2005 to 2008. Born in Onitsha, Nigeria, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound defender participated in a Nigerian U-17 national team camp in 2004.
Haroub, 26, joins the Whitecaps on loan from the Young Africans FC of the Tanzanian Premier League, where he played from 2006 to 2009. Young Africans (known locally as 'Yanga') are Tanzania's most successful club, having won 17 Premier League titles, including back-to-back championships in 2008 and 2009. Prior to joining Yanga, the 5-foot-10, 150-pound native of Michenzani, Zanzibar, played one season in the Zanzibar Premier League. As a member of the Tanzanian national team, Haroub has appeared in six FIFA World Cup qualifying matches for the Taifa Stars.
The Whitecaps also announced today that they have released defenders Paul Hamilton and Navid Mashinchi from the PDL team.
The Whitecaps return to Swangard Stadium this Saturday, August 15, at 7 p.m. PDT to take on Carolina RailHawks. Tickets are available by calling Ticketmaster at 604.280.4400 or by visiting whitecapsfc.com/tickets.
