China flooding kills 701, worst toll in a decade
BEIJING – More than 1,000 people have died or disappeared in severe flooding in China so far this year, and the heaviest rains are still to come, a senior official warned Wednesday.
This year's floods, which have caused tens of billions of dollars in damage already, have exacted the highest death toll since 1998, when the highest water levels in five decades claimed 4,150 lives.

Sand creations bring life to Durban beach front
Half-way down the golden sands to the cascading waves of the Indian Ocean there usually lies a collection of amazingly lifelike sand sculptures in the form of cars, buildings and wild animals.


These works can take up to a week to complete but can be destroyed in a matter of minutes. So why do their creators make them?

Sand sculptures have become a regular attraction on the Durban beach front.

For Siboniso Shezi, a 16-year-old homeless teenager, sculpting often means he doesn't have to go to bed on an empty stomach. "Sometimes people are really impressed by what we do and give us money," he says. "I enjoy what I do because it keeps me out of trouble. I also like getting donations from the tourists who visit Durban." His car sculpture took him and a friend three days to complete.

The perfectly named Sandile Dube, 17, lives more than 40 kilometres outside Durban and has already been making sand sculptures for four years.
"I use some of the money I make to travel between home and the beach. Some days I make up to 100 rand ($13; £9) a day, it makes me feel proud to earn a living on my own."
"I love making sand sculptures, most of them include wild animals because they fascinate me.
His latest masterpiece is a woman whose head is stuck inside a leopard's mouth.

He has been working along the beach front for the past 10 years.
Mr Dlamini is from Umlazi township, approximately 20 kilometres outside Durban and commutes to town daily - just to get his hands on the sand.

"I enjoy recreating homes or buildings I've seen. I think what we do goes a long way in further beautifying the beach," he says.
And while it could be frustrating to see all your efforts flattened by the high tide each day, at least it means he starts each day with a blank canvas.

Scientists say vaginal gel cuts HIV-infections by half

A vaginal gel has significantly cut the rate of women contracting HIV from infected partners in an experiment in South Africa, researchers said.

They said the gel, containing Aids drug tenofovir, cut infection rates among 889 women by 50% after one year of use, and by 39% after two and a half years.


If the results are confirmed it would be the first time that a microbicidal gel has been shown to be effective.


Such a gel could be a defence for women whose partners refuse to wear condoms.

Model of Bloodhound supersonic car unveiled

The British team hoping to drive a car faster than 1,000mph has unveiled a full-scale model of the vehicle.


The 1:1 replica of the 12.8m-long (42ft) Bloodhound SuperSonic Car (SSC) is the result of three years of aerodynamic study.

The model is a star turn at this year's Farnborough International Air Show.
The team has announced that aerospace manufacturer Hampson Industries will begin building the rear of the real vehicle in the first quarter of 2011.

Six Things to Do on Mandela Day
Johannesburg — The Nelson Mandela Institute and the Department of Basic Education have called on South Africans to use Mandela Day, 18 July, to make a difference by putting into practice any one of six simple ways to enhance a child's learning experience.

The campaign was launched in Johannesburg at the Nelson Mandela Foundation earlier in the month, with teachers, education activists, government representatives and pupils in attendance, reports SouthAfrica.info.

1.Many creches and schools are not happy, safe and warm. Taking some time to help clean the classrooms or work in the garden will create an exciting and inspirational space for pupils.

2.Many creches and classrooms don't have basic e ducational toys like puzzles and blocks, but these tools allow children to have fun while they learn.

3.Give a favourite book or write a story, one that a child is sure to enjoy. Many children don't have access to books written in their mother tongue, but often it is in this way that they form a lasting connection with books.

4.Reading to children, and with them, will allow them to experience the joy of books.

5.Story-telling is a way of passing on history, and teaching children about life, especially when the story is told by a person who has experienced the events they are relating.

6.Children learn through both independent and organised play, but many don't get the chance because they don't have suitable supervision and guidance at break times, or after school.

ICC Investigators Identify Six Hotspots in Chaos

Nairobi — Detectives from the International Criminal Court (ICC) have narrowed down their investigations into Kenya's post election violence to six hotspots.


Sources close to the investigations said the investigators who jetted in the country three weeks ago were concentrating on the six parts of the country, which were hardest hit by the violence that followed the disputed presidential elections in 2007.

The six hotspots are: Uasin Gishu, the greater Kericho, Kisumu, Naivasha, Mathare and Kibera slums.
Justice minister Mutula Kilonzo confirmed that the ICC investigators were already in the country collecting evidence in the six areas that were most affected by the deadly violence that almost tore the country apart.

"Yes, they are in the country. They are interviewing people in hospitals, mortuaries and in those areas where the violence took place, they came three weeks ago," Mr Kilonzo stated.
1,133 people were killed and 650,000 more uprooted from their homes - many of who are still living in camps for the internally displaced people two and a half years after the chaos.

All Stars: So Much Style!

Glamorous and sensational! The All Star Housemate cast arrived at the Big Brother Africa launch looking like the stars they are!

First out of the limo and onto the red carpet was Tanzania's Mwisho, handsome but keeping an air of mystery about him. He was followed by Mozambique's Jen looking pretty in pink! Then it was bubbly Paloma's turn to prance and pout for the cameras!

Munya made his way onto the stage with Zimbabwe's flag flying high - declaring that he would not be engaging in any "hanky panky" in the house! Code was next and his excitement about reuniting with Housemates from any season was extreme.
A clean shaven Yacob, in a three-piece suit stepped out of the limo in style, declaring the house would be fun, fun and more fun! Sheila from Kenya followed on, amazed that fellow season three Housemate, Munya was on the stage!

Casually Sammi B took his place next to IK, followed by the artistic, one and only rural swagger, Kaone.
Meryl then made an appearance, briefly flirting with IK, closely followed by the rest of the All Star cast, Uti, Lerato, Hannington and Tatiana!

 Happy Family, Already?

 The All Stars cast settles into the house striking a strong bond almost immediately. A deal made even sweeter by the sound of music!

Bursting into song, happy to be in the house with their new friends, they all sing the sweet, and childish, "I love you" song (made popular by Barney, the purple dinosaur), before Biggie interrupts the heart warming moment.

With the Secret Strongbox exposed,
and a hard-task assigned already, some Housemates might be singing another tune in the next couple of days.
