Science photographer Steve Gschmeissner has put everyday bugs under the microscope to provide these extreme close-ups of the creepy crawlies that can almost certainly be found in your home.

Flour mite: A pest in flour mills and grain stores, these mites sometimes find their way into homes where they live in flour, grains or cheese and need humid conditions to survive. A single female lays 500 eggs or more - sometimes as many as 25 a day. Infected food and dry food close by should be destroyed.

Bedbug: Not just the subject of a children's rhyme, the nocturnal bedbug really does bite. Its mouthpiece is used to suck blood from warm-blood animals - including humans. Though they do not transmit disease, their saliva can cause itchy swellings on the skin.

Silverfish: The primitive silverfish has remained unchanged for millions of years, making it a "living fossil". They eat almost anything including book glue, paper, photos, sugar, coffee, hair, carpets and dandruff and can live for a year between meals.

Red flour beetle: A 3mm-long agricultural pest that attacks stores of grain, cereal, pasta, biscuits and beans but which can also be found in larders and cupboards. They live for up to three years and lay hundreds of eggs in only a few months

Ddust mite: Feeding on human skin and crumbs of food, up to 10 million can live in one mattress. The females live up to 70 days and lay up to 100 eggs. A single mite produces around 2,000 droppings and can trigger allergic reactions.

.Daddy longlegs spider: So-called because its legs are around five times the length of its body, this spider preys on other spiders, injecting them with venom from its fangs. Native to the tropics, it has spread around the world and now lives in the UK.

Common housefly: The housefly has one pair of wings, six legs and two eyes each composed of 4,000 image-forming facets.

Bluebottle maggot: The larvae of this bug hatch from eggs laid on dead animals and humans. They are used in medicine to clean wounds. Once placed in a wound, the 1cm-long maggots feed on dead tissue. Their saliva contains anti-bacterial chemicals which keep injuries sterile.

Cat flea: One of the world's most common fleas, they bite and feed on people, but can only breed on cats. They have a life cycle of just 30 days.

American cockroach: It might be magnified a million times but the common cockroach doesn't get any prettier. This nocturnal creepy crawlie inhabits warm places.

Seattle, Washington

Tonight Tanzania's National Women's Football team, the Twiga Stars, took on the Northwest National Reds U-18 in a friendly match at the Starfire Sports Complex south of Seattle, Washington, USA.  Despite having traveled for almost two full days, spending 28 hours on planes and arriving only the night before, the Twiga Stars beat their American opponents 2-0, with goals by Eto Mlenzi and Esther "Lunyamila" Chabruma.  

The Northwest Nationals are one of the top youth soccer clubs in Washington State, and many of their players each season go on to earn soccer scholarships at top universities. 

The Twiga Stars are currently on their USA training trip sponsored by Ms. Rahma Al-Kharoosi, president of RBP Oil & Industrial Technology Ltd.  While in the USA, the Twiga Stars will be playing a number of matches, including a special showcase match on August 7 against the Seattle Sounders Women's Team, who play in the USL W-League, the second tier of USA women's soccer.  The aim of the trip is to gain experience before the African Women's Championship to be held in South Africa this October.  The Twiga Stars qualified for the continental finals by beating Ethiopia 4-2 on aggregate, then beating Eritrea 11-3 on aggregate.

Nemanja Vidic reaffirms commitment to Manchester United

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has insisted he never had any intention of quitting the club.

The 28-year-old Serbian was the subject of speculation for much of the summer suggesting he was set to leave United.
"I know there was all this speculation but I never said I wanted to go," said Vidic. "I always said I am happy here."
Meanwhile, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says striker Wayne Rooney, who was pictured out drinking at the weekend, has "impressed" in training.

Campbell was given 'dirty stones'

Model Naomi Campbell says she was given "dirty-looking" stones after a dinner attended by ex-Liberian leader Charles Taylor which she was later told were likely to be diamonds.

She was testifying at Mr Taylor's war crimes trial about allegations he gave her "blood diamonds" as a gift in 1997.
Prosecutors had said her evidence could help link Mr Taylor to the stones, which he is accused of using to fund civil war in Sierra Leone.
Mr Taylor denies the charges.
He says he never sold or traded diamonds for weapons.

Ms Campbell, who was late appearing in the courtroom, swore on a Bible before beginning her testimony.

Ms Campbell said she was given two or three unprocessed stones after a celebrity dinner in South Africa, hosted by former South African President Nelson Mandela and attended by US actress Mia Farrow and others, including Mr Taylor.
Before meeting him, she had not heard of Mr Taylor or of Liberia.


She said she was sleeping in her room that night when there was a knock at the door.
"Two men were there and gave me a pouch and said: 'A gift for you'," she said.
Wearing a demure cream dress, Naomi Campbell was cool and confident as she gave her evidence, but her evidence is very different from the clear testimony the prosecution wanted from their star witness.

It is critical for their case that they link Charles Taylor to the diamonds - the jewels that fuelled Sierra Leone's brutal civil war.
The men did not introduce themselves. She said she put the pouch next to her bed without looking inside it, and went back to sleep.
"I opened the pouch the next morning when I woke up... I saw a few stones in there, they were very small dirty-looking stones," she told the court. There was no explanation and no note, she said.
"The next morning at breakfast I told Ms Farrow and [her former agent Carole White] what had happened and one of the two said 'That's obviously Charles Taylor', and I said 'I guess that was'."
She said that at the time, she was not aware of any laws on unprocessed diamonds.

She gave the stones to Jeremy Ratcliffe of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund because she wanted them to go to charity, and said when she spoke to Mr Ratcliffe on the telephone in 2009, he said he still had them.

South Africa ex-police chief Selebi jailed for 15 years

A South African court has sentenced former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi to 15 years in jail for corruption.

Selebi, a former president of Interpol, was convicted in July of receiving bribes from a drug dealer.

Convicted dealer Glenn Agliotti paid Selebi 1.2m rand ($156,000; £103,000) to turn a blind eye to his business.
Selebi is the most senior official appointed by the country's government to have been convicted of corruption.

Chelsea to sign Brazil midfielder Ramires for £17m

Chelsea are hoping to sign Brazil midfielder Ramires from Benfica for £17m, the BBC has learned.

The 23-year-old will have a medical at the Premier League club on Wednesday.
It is thought a four-year deal for Ramires, who has 16 caps for his country, could be concluded by the end of the week.
The transfer has been reportedly complicated by the fact Benfica have a 50% stake in the player with a British-based businessman owning the other 50%.

Fifa fines Spain & Netherlands for World Cup behaviour

World Cup winners Spain and their opponents Netherlands have been fined by Fifa for their players' poor discipline in July's final.

Football's governing body fined the Dutch federation £9,080, while the Spanish association must pay £6,053.
English referee Howard Webb booked eight Dutch players and sent off defender John Heitinga in a bad tempered final in South Africa.
