R. Kelly ‘beeps’ Uganda

R. Kelly must be already in the US but if he could turn back the hands of time and remember what his Ugandan fans said at the end of his show in Kampala, maybe he would return and complete his act.

A section of fans chanted “we want more” as the Pied Piper of Rn’B said his goodbyes after just 60 minutes on stage during the Zain-sponsored I Believe concert at Lugogo Cricket Oval on Friday.

Hordes of disgruntled fans left the show fuming.
“I’m really a big R. Kelly fan, but that was crap,” one fan identified as Solomon Esco Mukasa complained. “I thought this being his first visit to East Africa, he would leave a mark, but he has let us down. He should have sacrificed more time.”
Some fans had paid up to Shs250,000 to watch the show from the Platinum wing while Gold went for Shs125,000 and regular tickets were sold for Shs30,000.

Around 36,000 people had turned-up by 10.20p.m. when Kelly started performing yet there were many fans still struggling to enter by the time Kelly left stage.

Kelly had engaged the audience and set the moods high before spoiling things with an ‘early’ exit.

His entrance was dramatic as he walked onto stage in darkness only for the audience to realise he was standing on stage after lights were switched on.

The excited fans gave him a rapturous welcome and he also quickly engaged the audience with direct communication asking them if they wanted the show to continue. The answer from the crowd was obviously “yes” and he made a promise that he never fulfilled by saying that he would perform each and every song of his. Instead, he just sampled most of the songs each for about one minute - justifying why he did so many songs in just one hour.

He also left out popular songs like Storm is Over, World’s Greatest and Burn It Up among others.

He started the show with a number of his Hip-hop songs to set the tempo before turning to his slower tracks. Then he talked of his flight phobia before introducing I Believe I Can Fly. Then he got into his sexual innuendo business with songs like Sex in the Kitchen, Bump n’ Grind, Honey Love and Make It Rain - and the audience seemed to love every bit of it.

He was backed up by a fine collection of musicians and blended thudding basses with louder rock elements making beautiful sound.

The stage was bright and the sound was loud enough to send monkeys running for dear life and the man on the lights must have taught the local lights-men that actually lights can speak without the artiste saying a single word.

Kelly also sang Down Low, Fiesta, Hotel, Ignition, Slow Wind, Snake, Happy People, Step in the Name of Love, That’s That, Thoia Thoing and Thank God It’s Friday among others.
The audience danced and sang along to all Kelly’s songs and cheered whenever he ended a song.

But cheers soon became complaints when Kelly announced that the show was over.

People first thought he was pulling their legs until technicians started wrapping up their equipment and stage lights switched off.

A few people started leaving but a big number stayed behind and when they left they went complaining and blaming the organisers for not telling R. Kelly which songs the audience wanted to see him perform.

Zain Uganda’s Jamal Sultan said that actually R. Kelly’s contract was for a one-hour performance.

“You cannot blame him (Kelly) because that was the agreement that he performs for 60 minutes,” he said. “The only problem is that he came on quite early and yet Ugandans are used to shows that run until late. We’re sorry.”

On Target: Two Million World Cup Tickets Sold

Fears of poor attendances at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa have been allayed after Fifa announced two thirds of match tickets have already been sold.

Fifa said the latest sales show a surge of interest from South African residents

Two million tickets have now gone, with several matches already oversubscribed.

The sales, announced by Fifa after the third of five phases of ticketing, reflect a surge of interest from South African residents, easing concerns about apathy in the host nation.

Of the 1.2 million applications received in the third ticketing phase, 79% were from South Africans.

"All games of the South African team will be sold out," said Danny Jordaan, the head of the Local Organising Committee.

Of the other 191 nations to apply for tickets, the United States is in the lead with 50,217 applications, followed by England with 41,529.

By contrast there have been relatively low numbers of applications from other leading football nations, including Germany with just 14,647.

Venus and her “baby sis” Serena are still beasts on the tennis court. They won the doubles title in the Aussie Open last night:

Venus and Serena Williams won their fourth Australian Open women’s doubles title, beating Cara Black and Liezel Huber 6-4, 6-3. The Williams sisters won the Australian title for the first time in 2001 and added championships in 2003 and last year. Black, from Zimbabwe, and Huber, a South African-born American citizen, won the 2007 title. It was the 11th time the Williams sisters have combined for a Grand Slam doubles title. Serena has 11 singles majors, also, and is hoping for a 12th in the Australian Open final on Saturday against Justine Henin.

“I look forward to more titles,” Serena Williams said. Venus Williams also has won a mixed-doubles title at the Australian Open – in 1998 with fellow American Jason Gimelstob. Serena Williams was a losing finalist in mixed doubles with Max Mirnyi of Belarus in 1999.

Wayne Rooney headed home in second-half injury-time to book Manchester United's place in the Carling Cup final after they inflicted a 4-3 aggregate victory over bitter rivals Manchester City.

Dubai to open world's tallest building

The world's tallest building is set to be opened in the Gulf emirate of Dubai. More than 800m (2,625ft) high and clad in 26,000 glass panels, Burj Dubai has 160 floors and more than 500,000 sq m of space for offices and apartments. Construction began in 2004, at the height of an economic boom. The opening comes after a financial crisis which has seen Dubai bailed out by Abu Dhabi. The exact height of the $1.5bn tower is secret, but it far exceeds that of the previous record holder, Taipei 101. It will also lay claim to the highest occupied floor, the tallest service lift, and the world's highest observation deck - on the 124th floor. The world's highest mosque and swimming pool will meanwhile be located on the 158th and 76th floors. Though not complete on the inside, Burj Dubai will be officially opened by Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, at 2000 (1600 GMT) on Monday, 1,325 days after excavation work started. At a ceremony to be attended by 60,000 guests, Sheikh Mohammed will also reveal the exact height of the tower that dwarfs the 508m Taipei 101 and the 629m KVLY-TV mast in the US, the tallest man-made structure. Its spire can been seen from 95km (60 miles) away.

Hindu sacrifice of 250,000 animals begins

Cheers and protests as thousands of buffalo are decapitated at start of festival in Nepal honouring Hindu goddess Gadhimai The world's biggest animal sacrifice began in Nepal today with the killing of the first of more than 250,000 animals as part of a Hindu festival in the village of Bariyapur, near the border with India. The event, which happens every five years, began with the decapitation of thousands of buffalo, killed in honour of Gadhimai, a Hindu goddess of power. With up to a million worshippers on the roads near the festival grounds, this year's fair seems more popular than ever, despite vocal protests from animals rights groups who have called for it to be banned. "It is the traditional way, " explained 45-year old Manoj Shah, a Nepali driver who has been attending the event since he was six, "If we want anything, and we come here with an offering to the goddess, within five years all our dreams will be fulfilled." . Crowds thronged the roads and camped out in the open, wrapped in blankets against the cool mist. The festivities included a ferris wheel, fortune-telling robots and stalls broadcasting music and offering tea and sugary snacks. As dawn broke, the fair officially opened with the sacrifice of two rats, two pigeons, a pig, a lamb and a rooster in the main temple, to cheers of "Long live Gadhimai" from spectators pushing against each other for a better view.

Hirano, Moose, and Khalfan re-sign November 3, 2009

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today the re-signing of defender/midfielder Takashi Hirano, as well as midfielders Justin Moose and Nizar Khalfan. All three players have agreed to one-year contracts - plus an option. The Whitecaps also announced that they will not exercise the 2010 contract options on defender/midfielders Chris Pozniak and Nadir Haroub Ali. Hirano, 35-years-old, returns for a third season with the 'Caps after a successful first two years in Vancouver. A regular at left fullback for Teitur Thordarson's squad, the native of Shimizu City, Japan, made 38 appearances in all competitions for a total of 3,248 minutes of action during the 2009 campaign. Hirano's minutes total was the most among all Whitecaps outfield players during the season. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound veteran was named the club's Outstanding Defender of 2009 for his play in the Whitecaps backline, with the fullback also recording three assists during the season. In all, the former Japanese international has appeared in 68 Whitecaps matches over the past two seasons. Moose, 25-years-old, also returns for his third season with the Whitecaps after enduring an injury-plagued 2009 campaign. The native of Statesville, North Carolina, made just 15 appearances for 484 minutes of action, with the winger appearing in half the number of matches that he played during his first year in Vancouver. During the club's United Soccer Leagues First Division (USL-1) championship season of 2008, the former Wake Forest University star appeared in 30 games for 1,892 minutes of action, scoring two goals and recording five assists last year. Before joining the 'Caps, the 5-foot-7, 150-pound midfielder spent two years in Major League Soccer with D.C. United. Khalfan, 21-years-old, will enter his first full season with the Whitecaps in 2010 after coming to Vancouver from Tanzanian Premier League club Moro United for an undisclosed financial amount on August 13. Playing primarily in the middle or on the right-hand side of midfield, the native of Mtwara, Tanzania, started nine of his 14 Whitecaps appearances for 729 minutes of action. This included five appearances and one start during the club's playoff run to the 2009 USL-1 Championship Series. Pozniak, 28-years-old, leaves the Whitecaps after completing his second spell with the club. The native of North York, Ontario, made 14 appearances for the 'Caps after re-signing with Vancouver on July 30. During his first Whitecaps spell in 2008, the defender/midfielder played in nine matches before moving to Scottish First Division club Dundee FC. Ali, 26-years-old, returns to his parent club in Tanzanian Premier League outfit Young Africans FC after completing a loan spell with the 'Caps. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound native of Michenzani, Zanzibar, did not make a single appearance for the Whitecaps men's team during his short stay in Vancouver. Whitecaps 2010 season tickets are now on sale. Season tickets include all men’s and women's team regular season and playoff home matches at Swangard Stadium, Nutrilite Canadian Championship home matches against Toronto FC and Montreal Impact, as well as priority listing for Vancouver MLS 2011 in BC Place.
