World Cup 2010 Nigeria's Mikel Obi ruled out

Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi has been ruled out of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with a knee injury.
Mikel joins fellow Chelsea stars Michael Essien and Michael Ballack in missing out through injury, while Didier Drogba is a major doubt.
The 23-year-old underwent minor knee surgery in May and feels he has not recovered sufficiently.
"We have dropped Mikel from the squad after he said he did not want to risk his career," said a Nigeria spokesman.
Nigeria will replace Obi Mikel with the uncapped Brown Ideye, a striker from French club Sochaux.
Robben a major doubt for World Cup 2010
Dutch winger Arjen Robben is a major doubt for the World Cup finals after limping off during his country's 6-1 friendly rout of Hungary in Amsterdam.

Second-half substitute Robben scored two goals before injuring his hamstring when in possession in the 85th minute.

Coach Bert van Marwijk revealed Robben will undergo a scan on Sunday to determine the extent of the problem.

"He felt a sharp pain," said van Marwijk. "That does not bode well, but I do not lose hope."

Robben has been in top form for German Double winners and losing Champions League finalists Bayern Munich and his absence would be a devastating blow to the Dutch.

The team fly out to South Africa on Saturday night without the former Chelsea and Real Madrid player and Van Marwijk fears the 26-year-old may not even follow his team-mates to the finals.

Robben (centre) limps off at the Amsterdam ArenA
"My first thought was this can't be true, the end the final warm-up match, everyone is fit and then this," he added.

"We now have to wait. I can replace Robben until 24 hours before our opening match but as long as there is hope he recovers in time he will stay in the squad."

The Netherlands open their campaign on 14 June against Denmark, with Japan and Cameroon their other opponents in Group E.

Van Marwijk's side have continued their excellent form from qualifying, when they topped their group with a 100% record, by thrashing Ghana 4-1 in a warm-up match four days ago in Rotterdam before humiliating the Hungarians by an even greater margin.

After Balazs Dzsudzsak had given the visitors a sixth-minute lead, Arsenal striker Robin van Persie drew the sides level before the break.

In the second half, though, it was plain-sailing for the Dutch with goals from Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Mark van Bommel and Eljero Elia blowing away their opponents.

However, van Marwijk admitted that the convincing win would be scant consolation if his worst fears over Robben were to be realised.

"I would rather lose this match and have Arjen stay fit," he said.

Rio ruled out of World Cup
Rio Ferdinand's World Cup is over, with a knee injury leaving his dreams in tatters
Didier Drogba is out of the World Cup

Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba is out of the World Cup after fracturing his right elbow.

The skipper left the field clutching his right arm in the 2-0 friendly success over Japan in Switzerland on Friday after a clash in the 16th minute with Brazilian-born defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka.

A hospital scan has now confirmed the injury, and team-mate Kolo Toure says the striker is out of the finals.

Manchester City's Toure said he was informed of the news by Drogba himself.
Earlier, before the injury was confirmed, team boss Sven Goran Eriksson had spoken of his worry over Drogba.

He said: "It's an elbow injury but we don't know how bad it is, we (are going) straight to the hospital.

"I think we should get an answer before we leave.

"If it's serious, it's very worrying, he is our captain, one of the best strikers in the world."
Highs and lows
Drogba experienced the highs and lows of the game in quick succession as he had helped open the scoring in favour of the Africans just three minutes earlier, taking a free-kick which was deflected in off Tanaka.

The Ivorians should have seen off their weaker opponents by a larger margin but had to wait until the 79th minute for Toure to add a second goal to seal the win following a Saka Tiene free-kick.

Drogba's replacement Seydou Doumbia wasted several opportunities, firing over after Toure set him up on the half hour and then shooting off target seconds before the break, while Aruna Dindane also went close as Japan struggled to hold their lines.

Meanwhile, Shunsuke Nakamura might have given the Japanese something to cheer but his free-kick five minutes after the interval was collected smartly by Ivorian keeper Boubacar Barry.

Japan must now try to find some form ahead of their Group E meetings with further African opposition in the shape of Cameroon as well as Denmark and Holland, while Ivory Coast will go up against Brazil, Portugal and North Korea in Group G.
