Woman sues airline for leaving her asleep in seat

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A woman left locked alone in a plane asleep for about four hours after landing at Philadelphia International Airport is suing United Airlines.

Ginger McGuire, 36, is suing for false imprisonment, infliction of emotional distress and negligence, her attorney Geoffrey Fieger told the U.S. newspaper Detroit Free Press.

McGuire fell asleep on a late-night United Express flight from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia. She failed to wake up after the 50-passenger plane touched down at 12:27 a.m. local time and everyone else disembarked.

A cleaning crew eventually roused her, but she was kept locked in the plane until federal officers were satisfied that she was not a terrorist, said the newspaper.

How to ask a woman out

It seems so simple: You like a woman. You ask her out. She says yes. You go out. She falls in love with you. She rubs your feet at night during SportsCenter... Ah, but were it so easy.

Asking someone out on a date is similar to asking for a raise. Even when you know you’re worthy of a “yes,” success lies in the delivery.
(And when you get that “yes,” you feel like a lotta bucks!) Now, since every delivery could use a little improvement, here are some dos and don’ts compiled from interviews with precisely the people you want to impress: women.

1. DO be straightforward. If you want her to go out with you, say so. Get right to the point. When Dave first called Mimi, a 35-year-old retail supervisor in Connecticut, he asked her for suggestions of business books that helped her be successful. They hit it off so well, he decided to take the connection further. “A few days later,” says Mimi, “he called again and said, ‘Hey, I just wanted to call and thank you for giving me the title of that book.’ I said, ‘Oh, you didn’t have to call to say that.’ And he said, ‘I didn’t. I called to ask you out.’ I was so surprised. I didn’t know a lot of people who were doing that honest and straightforward approach. It was a very refreshing thing!” She said yes, by the way — and one marriage and two kids later, she’s glad she did. Browse Local Singles at Match.com on Yahoo

2. DON’T ask her out via email. Even in the Internet age, the best way to ask a woman out are the old-fashioned ways: face-to-face or by phone, because she’s more likely to say yes. Why? “In the moment of asking, she might not want to hurt your feelings, so if she’s so-so or not sure about the date, you have a better shot at getting a yes,” explains communication expert Laurie Puhn, J.D., author of Instant Persuasion: How to Change Your Words to Change Your Life (www.lauriepuhn.com). In fact, according to Puhn, economic research even shows that asking for things in “real time” creates an important emotional connection that makes it far more likely for an askee to say “yes.” And as a woman, I can attest to the fact that email provides a too-easy out. When guys I wasn’t into asked me out by email, for instance, I would just wait a few days to reply, then finally write something like, “Oh, sorry I didn’t write back, but work has been nuts! I’m actually going to be working late for the next couple of weeks, but we should catch up next month. Take care.” It was easy to say no over the impersonal computer connection. But I’ve gone on more than a few dates with guys I wasn’t sure about who went for it in person. There’s just something about being asked in the moment that just makes a woman say yes. Online daters take note: Even though you begin by emailing one another, make phone contact at some point before you suggest a date. Not only does it give you a better sense of the person to find out if you “click,” but — once again — it ups your chances of getting a yes when you do finally ask.

3. DO look her in the eyes and smile when you ask her. Obvious stuff, right? But if you’re nervous, you might not do it! You might look from side to side, or down at your feet with an expression of fear or doubt or uncertainty. And while some girls go for the utterly adorable anti-social shy type, most women will appreciate a guy who is confident enough to look her in the eyes, smile, breathe, and say, “Hey. Wanna go out next week?”

4. DON’T pass the buck to her. If you meet a woman you like, don’t hand her your card at the end of the night and just say, “Call me if you want.” Instead, take control and get her phone number or email (which you’d use to email her for her phone number…). Doing so actually widens the net for the type of woman you’ll get to go out with. Here’s why: “If you give women your card, the ones who call you are all going to be assertive and confident types,” explains Puhn. But if you also like women who might be shy, or just don’t feel comfortable going out on a limb for a date, giving those women your number isn’t going to get you a date with them. “If you call the women yourself, says Puhn, “you’ll get a larger pool of women.”

5. DO practice your cool, can-do tone. When you like a woman and really want her to say yes to a date, the pressure may come out in your voice. Your goal is to get rid of that fearful timbre and replace it with the tone you use when you ask for other things in life: When you ask the waitress if you can have the garlic mashed potatoes instead of the baked potato, she might say no... but you still ask. When you ask your buddy if you can borrow 50 bucks, he might say no... but you still ask. The same goes for asking a woman out. She might say no, but you should still ask. And do it in the same nonchalant tone you’d use for those other questions. In fact, practice asking all three of those questions — out loud — together: “Hi, can I have the garlic mashed potatoes? Dude, lend me 50 bucks? You want to go to dinner some time?” That’s the laid-back tone that says, Hey, I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask. And it’s the one that will make her think, Hey, it couldn’t hurt to say yes...

6. DON’T be vague. If you want to go out on a date with a woman, make it clear right upfront. This helps on many levels. First, being specific makes it more likely you’ll actually go out on the date. See, if you just say, “Hey, we should hang out sometime…” and leave it hanging, you haven’t closed the deal. Instead, suggest, “Hey, would you like to go out for coffee next Thursday after work?” and you probably will. Being specific also shows you’re serious about her. “You want to lay it on the line,” says Puhn. “If you say something like, ‘We should get coffee sometime,’ it shows you’re testing the waters. It says to her you haven’t decided if you want to go out with her. If you say, ‘I want to spend two hours having coffee with you at five o’clock,’ it says to her, ‘I thought about this. I’m not just Mr. Cool. I actually want to talk to you and get to know you.’” Show that you are a man with a mission, and she’ll be more likely to accept.

7. DO knock it out of the park with originality. The more specific ideas you have about a potential date, the more impressed she’ll be. And if you want to impress her, take her to something memorable. So skip the movie first date (so you don’t spend the first two hours of a date sitting in a dark room, not talking, facing away from each other…). If you really want to up your chances, offer her something original that she’ll want to do regardless of the company she’s with: a new tapas restaurant, concert tickets, sunset on a catamaran, a picnic in a Japanese garden, seats at a daytime talk show. Mimi and Dave (the retail supervisor and her now-husband) had such busy schedules, they couldn’t find a night to do dinner. But instead of acting deflated, says Mimi, “Dave suggested flying kites on a Sunday afternoon.” That’s the key: Get her by your side first, and then you can turn on your true charm. I once agreed to go on a date because the guy said, “Meet me at the ferry dock on the West Side, and I’ll take you to my favorite secret place.” The relationship didn’t blossom, but I’ve never forgotten the boat ride and the chocolate shop he took me to for spicy hot chocolate.

8. DO make it clear it’s a date with one specific phrase. Ever been on one of those, I’m-not-sure-if-it’s-a-date dates? If so, you know how awkward it can be as the two of you figure out who likes who (and how much), who’s paying (and how much)... and if you’ll get a kiss at the end of the night (and how much...). Avoid this by being clear it’s a date when you ask. The best thing to say? “I’d like to take you out to...” If there is a chance she might be confused about your status, the phrasing should be very specific. “Saying, ‘I’d like to take you out to’ puts a woman at ease,” explains Puhn. “It says it’s a date. It says he’s paying. And it shows confidence.”

The bottom line? Handle the situation of asking a woman out the same way you’d handle scoring tickets to your favorite playoffs: If you were standing next to the guy who could give those tickets to you, would you make small talk and beat around the bush over the course of a few months? Would you ask your friend’s friend to ask for the tickets? Would you be vague about whether or not you wanted to go? Would you hand the guy your card and tell him to call you if he wanted? No, no, no and no. You’d go right to the source, be direct, and ask for what you want! It works in life, and it works in love. So try it! There are women out there right now wondering why guys never seem to ask them out. Next time, step up to the plate and be the one who does.

MIM'S New Album is out on sale
Running Back super proudly presents: Mim Suleiman! The Zanzibar born and Sheffield based singer/songwriter/performer made quite a name for herself on the afro-beat stages of this world with her mixture of East African vocals and percussive traditions. Tungi is Mim Suleiman’s debut long-player which has her singing and writing in her native tongue Swahili.
Tungi is a mixture of all things ultramodern afro beat, rhythm trax and futuristic pop music. Starting off with the uplifting vibe and beat of Hebu, you will find boogie moments like Nyuli or Bibi Na Mpu (including a dub version) along the way, as well as quieter moments, rhythmic adventures called Flava or the hi-life guitars of Mingi and Haraka Haileti Baraka. Music for the world, led by the powerhouse that is Mim Suleiman and her lyrics about love and affection, freedom, oppression, unity and everyday life. Mesmerizing and addictive. Garrincha was born in Pau Grande (Rio de Janeiro), where people still venerate his name, on October 28th 1933. He was the seventh child of a night watchman, and was born with his left leg bent inwards and his right leg six centimetres shorter and curved outwards. The doctors that examined him told his parents that he would have never been able to walk properly.
Mané, however, made his doctors change their mind, as he became the best right wing in the history of football. After trying in vain to pass the selections at CR Vasco da Gama, América FC and San Cristoval, he got to Botafogo FR, where he took .a test and was passed by his own marker, the great Nilton Santos. Later he shared with him the great successes got with Botafogo FR and the Seleção...
He got his international consecration with his appearances at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and in Chile in 1962. His feints made the defenders of the opposing team go crazy, and were one of the main offensive means of the Brazilian selection which won the World Cup in 1958 and in 1962. In 1958 Garrincha started from the bench but then he had the chance to play thanks to the intervention of Nilton Santos and of the main Brazilian players, who convinced Mister Feola to line him up with the seventeen-year-old Pelé. What happened was that Brazil won hands down all the matches, and got the Cup for the first time in their history. In the 1962 World championship in Chile he was the brightest star. Pelé got injured in the second match of the preliminaries and Garrincha took his team-mates by the hand, and with his extraordinary pieces of play the Seleção repeated the victory got 4 years before in Sweden. Mané risked to skip the final for a sending-off got in the semi-final against Chile, but FIFA pardoned him and allowed him to play the final against Czechoslovakia, which Brazil won by 3 to 1. Garrincha was the topscorer (with 4 goals) and best player of the tournament.
In 1963, however, the way down of his career started: in fact, he underwent a knee operation because of a car accident, but after it his performance was limited. He played the world championship in England in 1966, the Seleção was eliminated from the World Cup in the preliminaries, and Garrincha suffered the first and only defeat in his career with the shirt of the selection, against Hungary. That was the match that made him say goodbye to the Seleção, with them he had played 50 official matches and scored 13 goals between 1955 and 1966. After that World Cup he played with a few clubs and spent also short spells with French and Italian teams until his farewell to football in 1973.
Garrincha represented a real legend, the press of the time described him as a fantastic and incomparable player because of his great speed, impossible goals, perfect assists and crosses, sensational feints in spite of his twisted leg. Shattered by alcohol, forgotten and completely broken, he died in Rio de Janeiro on January 20th, 1983 when he was not 50 yet.

Mourinho reveals transfer plans for Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has revealed his transfer plans for his new job at Real Madrid and hinted that he could target English midfield duo Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

Mourinho is set to take charge at the Santiago Bernabeu once terms have been finalised between Real and European champions Inter Milan, after Madrid sacked Manuel Pellegrini on Wednesday night to clear the way for his arrival. Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, Mourinho lifted the lid on his plans for new recruits as he bids to challenge Barcelona's dominance of La Liga.

"I like players at the end of their careers. I love to have some players around 33 or 34-years-old,'' he said. "They are players that you buy which you cannot recoup the money from, but if you get two or three years out of them it is worth it. Both (Lampard and Gerrard) are two great players and always give everything."

Mourinho dismissed the idea of signing Benfica left-back Fabio Coentrao, describing him as a Portuguese Marcelo (who already plays at Madrid), and distanced himself from a move for Angel Di Maria as well.

"Di Maria is a fantastic player in a smaller league,'' he said. ''I have doubts about how he can perform in a championship like Spain or Italy. If he is available at an affordable price then I will take the risk, but the price is extortionate, and I do not like my clubs to pay crazy prices for players. I want three or four defensive players, but we need to improve the attack as well."

Speaking on possible formations, Mourinho hinted he could move for Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole, who has been linked with a move to join his former boss in the summer, but also admitted his admiration for Inter's Maicon on the other side of defence. "Normally I play with four at the back, with two offensive full-backs like [Ashley] Cole and Maicon. Then a triangle in midfield and three forwards," he said.

Mourinho also responded to the Madrid fans who want to win, obtain titles but also see good football: ''My Madrid will always play well, attack and will be winners. However, there will be times when we will have to face the game in a different manner.

''Having said that, my team always goes out on the pitch with a clear idea: to win. And if we are winning 3-1 and we only have 10 players on the pitch, then my players will have to sit back to defend. That's the way it is.

''It's very difficult during 90 minutes to always be better than your opponent. There's always a time in which you need to be a team and make sacrifices. It will be a balanced team. A team that plays to win titles must be aware aware of its virtues and its defects and has to work as a unit.

''A team that wants to win titles has to win games and a team that wants to win games has to play well. We will be a side with its own identity, we will not imitate anybody. The identity will be set by the players and me. For this we will have to work very hard.''

While he was cagey about his future at Inter before the Champions League final, Mourinho admitted that he had already made the decision to move before he lifted the trophy.

"Before the final, a decision was made to come to Madrid. After that Inter knew it was not about a new contract or money. I want to coach Real," he concluded.

Tell me how you really feel.......

Do you remember life before text messaging? I had my first cell phone my freshman year of high school (5 years ago) and instantly began texting all of my friends. Constantly. At first it seemed like just an addicting habit, but now it has become such a norm I don't even think about it. Text messages allow us to efficiently keep in contact, but it also changes how we truly communicate with people. You can pick a fight with someone through a text message, you can tell them how you really feel, or just say anything in general that you would never be able to say face-to-face. What are some of the craziest texts you've received or sent? And why is it so easy to let your guard down through text message?
While texting may cripple real-life relationships, it can be pretty exciting to say what you dare to send (or receive) in a text message. These are some of my personal favorites that have stopped by my phone, both good and bad.

"I really wanted to kiss you tonight. Just to let you know."

"And you still have no idea how I feel about you. I want to be with you soooo bad."

"And I'm happy we talked how we did last night. That is the kind of trust that I want both of us to have in each other."

"Now if you'll excuse me, I have a life to live outside of your drama queen games. Let me know when you're ready to handle things in a more mature manner."

"I miss you so much and I don't want to spend a second not thinking about you, or a day without seeing or talking to you."

"My past I can't change, but I can say I'm sorry."

"When someone tells you they love you, you're kind of forced to imagine the possibilities."

"..I'm not an angry person so I'm gonna let that one go cause you don't know what you're talking about."

"You're loved more than you know."

"There's a girl sitting next to me who keeps singing aloud while listening to her iPod and she sucks. She sounds like a dying seagull. She won't stop and I really want to punch her. I'm trying to write a speech for tomorrow I don't want to hear screeching wails of dying birds."

"Get out of my intersection."

"Oh, he flirts with everyone. I think he has a girlfriend though."

Haunting images of the gulf oil disaster
It’s been more than a month since an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig killed 11 people and blew out an undersea well that continues to gush oil into the Gulf of Mexico. In the following weeks, there have been attempts to contain and control the scope of the environmental damage.

But so far none have been successful. Over the weekend, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal announced he intended to proceed with plans to construct sand booms to protect his state's shoreline — without waiting for federal approval. Meanwhile, engineers for BP are working feverishly to prepare for their "top kill" maneuver, hoping an injection of heavy mud will stop the leak.

Dead sharks and dolphins are washing ashore. Crabs, turtles and birds are being found soaked in oil as the slick sloshes into Louisiana’s wetlands. South of New Orleans, chocolate-like globs of oil have shut down the public beach.

Coast Guard officials say the spill’s impact now stretches 150 miles. Some scientists fear the spreading plumes will catch the ocean current to the Florida Keys and up to the eastern seaboard.

Photographers' images, some of them chillingly beautiful, can only begin to hint at the enormity of the disaster.
