Around the NBA: Hasheem Thabeet scores 19 in D-League;Lester Hudson debut

Grizzlies center Hasheem Thabeet scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds on Sunday in his second game with the NBA Development League's Dakota Wizards, and guard Lester Hudson scored nine points in his debut with the Wizards, after being assigned to the squad by the Grizzlies earlier in the day.

Thabeet went 8-of-10 from the field, 3-of-4 from the free-throw line and blocked six shots for the Wizards, who defeated the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, 94-85. Thabeet played 38:16, had three fouls and committed three turnovers.

Hudson was 3-of-12 from the field, including 1-of-3 from 3-point range. He had five rebounds, six assists,o ne steal and did not commit a turnover in 23:15.

Hudson averaged 4.3 points and 1.3 rebounds on 38-percent shooting in eight appearances with Memphis after he was claimed off waivers Jan. 8. The 6-3 Memphis native was originally selected by Boston with the 58th pick in the 2009 draft.

Hudson did two stints in the D-League while with the Celtics.

Thabeet, who was the No. 2 overall pick in last year's draft, had eight points, two rebounds and four fouls in 18 minutes in his NBDL debut with the Wizards on Friday.

The Wizards' next game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when they host the Albuquerque Thunderbirds.

ASHLEY COLE can escape from his personal problems by choosing between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Both Spanish giants are monitoring his situation closely and are ready to meet Chelsea's £25million valuation.

Cole's marriage to pop star wife Cheryl looks doomed after his sleazy string of affairs.

And a highly-placed source last night refused to rule out a summer move to Spain.

He said: "Ashley is having a rough time at the moment.

"If he and Cheryl get divorced, why would he want to stay in this country?"

Madrid first expressed their interest in the England star when he signed for Chelsea from Arsenal in August 2006.

They remain desperate for a left-back and, if ex-Blues boss Jose Mourinho takes over as expected in the summer, Cole would be the ideal target.

Cole, 29, could expect to earn up to £150,000 a week at the Bernabeu.

Relations between Chelsea and the player are already strained.

Blues owner Roman Abramovich was furious to learn Cole had smuggled girls into team hotels and is now expected to fine him two weeks' wages of around £200,000 for damaging the club's image.

Chelsea feel let down by their international defender, though boss Carlo Ancelotti will fight to keep the man he rates the world's best left-back.

GatorBike: the alligator motorbike that helps to save pets

When it comes to spreading the message about conserving wildlife, we’re more used to protesters chaining themselves to trees or digging tunnels in front of road-builders. But one charity fundraiser decided instead to spread an entire alligator skin over a custom-built gas-guzzling chopper motorbike – and sell 1,000 raffle tickets at a snappy £75 each. Jim Jablon, owner of the Wildlife Rehab centre in Hernando, Florida, devised the GatorBike to raise funds for the charity, which rescues neglected or abused exotic pets. The 120mph reptilian ride features the skin and skull of an alligator culled and donated by state officials. ‘I thought, “Why not put it to good use?”’ said the 45-year-old. The skin is detachable but the head is fixed perm-anently into the handlebars and has the speedometer implanted into the back of the skull. And the prize draw is set to be just as quirky as the toothy two-wheeler itself – with the winning ticket to be plucked from a pool full of alligators by a 22-year-old model. ‘It’s not dangerous,’ said Mr Jablon. ‘We’re not going to tie a chicken to her or anything.’

Ethiopia-Kenya power grid link to go live this year despite protests

Kenya and Ethiopia, two nations that have co-existed peacefully for five decades in one of Africa’s toughest neighbourhood, last week deepened their economic ties with a major energy-sharing deal.

Meeting on the sidelines of the African Union conference, President Mwai Kibaki and his counterpart, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, signed deals for a new power–grid connection.

This will enable Kenya to tap into cheaper electricity as its northern neighbour embarks on one of the continent’s biggest large-scale hydroelectric power projects.

The deal opens a crucial strategic front on Kenya’s northern border, which is expected to expand the country’s trade routes and renew security ties with a historical ally.

Marriage of convenience

It is a marriage dictated by the fast changing fortunes of the East African and Horn of Africa regions.

Kenya has long dominated the region economically, but its political stability was shaken by a disputed presidential election in 2007.

The country is now facing up to the reality of having to accommodate its fast rising neighbours, Uganda and Tanzania.

Uganda, soon expected to be awash with oil wealth, has been courting Southern Sudan and deepening its links with the Great Lakes economies.

In general, it is looking beyond Kenya, even as the East African Community blossoms.

Tanzania’s economy, rich with natural gas and minerals, is fast catching up with Kenya’s. The country is also expanding its links with the Great Lakes region.

Ethiopia, a nation that has remained aloof for most of its history, preferring not to join any of the regional economic groupings, currently faces not only an acute currency crisis, but also an increasingly hostile neighbourhood across all its borders, except with Kenya and Djibouti.

Sudan accuses Addis Ababa of arming the Government of Southern Sudan. Addis has sent troops into Somalia and is now facing a backlash from Somali rebel groups in its Ogaden region, aided by Eritrea, a breakaway nation with which it still has border disputes.

All this turmoil has sapped the strength of the Ethiopian economy, while the Eritrean succession has long cut off its access to the sea.

Yet, the Ethiopian economy, with its access to big rivers that feed the Nile and fertile lands, and a population of 80 million, has the potential of becoming a major trading partner with Kenya.

MSANII BEBE COOL AKIPELEKWA HOSPITAL APOJANA BAADA YA KUPIGWA RISASI NA POLISI JIJINI KAMPALA,

Dr. Jose Chameleone visits Bebe Cool at Nsambya Hospital. Related:

Musician Moses Ssali a.k.a Bebe Cool yesterday underwent further surgery, the second time in 24 hours, following a gush of blood from gunshot wounds in his left thigh.
Ms Zuena Kirema, the artiste’s wife, said last evening that the bleeding worsened around 11a.m. and doctors at Nsambya Hospital worked on him in the theatre for four hours. “I don’t know the kind of surgery they did,” she said, offering that her husband’s condition was stabilising.

On Saturday, doctors removed a bullet from Bebe’s thigh, several hours after a Policeman allegedly shot him – and three others - at a popular city hangout, following a yet-to-be explained scuffle.
Police arrested SPC Alfred Achikan immediately after the shooting on Friday night and are holding him at Jinja Road Police Station as a prime suspect.

Nsambya Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr Martin Nsubuga, said he was yet to get an update on the artiste’s condition but he could have been wheeled back to the theatre for “dressing of the wounds, which are deep”.
The other victims of the shooting were recovering well.

Bebe’s shooting, which has evoked sympathy and guarded criticism alike, has brought to the fore debate on the conduct of our music celebrities and apparently trigger-happy security men. Other top musicians, in various accounts offered yesterday, asked government to carry thorough investigations and punish whoever was on the wrong, provoking the night shooting.

Juliana Kanyomozi
As a person, I feel bad for what he is going through. My thoughts are with his family through this moving period. But I don’t know how the fighting started and I don’t know who was in the wrong so I can’t judge anybody. However, some action should be taken because you don’t just shoot at people like that. The culprit must be penalised.

Mesach Ssemakula
I can’t tell who is wrong because I don’t know what happened but of course the policeman was wrong to just shoot at unarmed person like that. But this ego thing in artistes should also stop because fighting is not what the fans want - they want good music. The good thing is that our brother Bebe Cool is still alive.

Jose Chameleone
It’s hard to tell who was in the wrong when you weren’t there. But since Bebe Cool was not armed, it was extremely ruthless to shoot at him, not only once and not only twice but several times. That policeman should know that there are several ways of dealing with a stubborn person professionally without releasing a bullet and you still win.

Mariam Ndagire
I don’t know what exactly happened between Bebe Cool and the policeman. But I guess there was an exchange of words and I blame Bebe Cool for forgetting that of the two he was the celebrity and even ‘bigger.’ If Bebe Cool lost his legs, it wouldn’t only be his family disappointed but his fans too and everybody would be saying, ‘he could have avoided it.’

Halima Namakula
Policemen and other security people want to show authority. Everyone knows that policemen think people despise them and so they always try to show some power that they have, guns inclusive. It’s unnecessary. When they find a person like Bebe Cool who has a short temper of course, the outcome is a fight.
