South Africa ex-police chief Selebi jailed for 15 years

A South African court has sentenced former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi to 15 years in jail for corruption.

Selebi, a former president of Interpol, was convicted in July of receiving bribes from a drug dealer.

Convicted dealer Glenn Agliotti paid Selebi 1.2m rand ($156,000; £103,000) to turn a blind eye to his business.
Selebi is the most senior official appointed by the country's government to have been convicted of corruption.

Chelsea to sign Brazil midfielder Ramires for £17m

Chelsea are hoping to sign Brazil midfielder Ramires from Benfica for £17m, the BBC has learned.

The 23-year-old will have a medical at the Premier League club on Wednesday.
It is thought a four-year deal for Ramires, who has 16 caps for his country, could be concluded by the end of the week.
The transfer has been reportedly complicated by the fact Benfica have a 50% stake in the player with a British-based businessman owning the other 50%.

Full Face Transplant Patient Makes First Public Appearance

The head of the surgical team, Dr. Joan Pere Barret, said Monday that Oscar will need between a year and 18 months of physical therapy and is expected to regain up to 90 percent of his facial functions. He is now being released from the hospital and sent home.

He is able to drink liquids and eat soft foods, and has been able to speak for the past two months, the hospital said in a statement. The patient also has regained feeling in most of his face and is partly recovering movement of his muscles. One good sign was that a week after the operation, he had to be shaved because of beard growth.

A Spanish man who underwent the world's first full face transplant appeared before TV cameras Monday for the first time since his surgery, thanking his doctors and the family of the donor.

At the news conference, Oscar seemed relaxed as he looked out at reporters with eyes he cannot yet close completely. A younger woman identified as his sister, whose name was not given to protect the family's privacy, said her brother looks forward to leading a normal life.

Former Spain striker Raul has joined German side Schalke after ending his 18-year career with Real Madrid.


The 33-year-old, who announced his departure from the Spanish giants on Monday, had hinted he could make a move to a Premier League side in England.
But on Wednesday he signed a two-year deal with Schalke, who finished second in the Bundesliga last season.
"We have signed an exceptional footballer and world-class goalscorer," said Schalke coach Felix Magath.

Diego Maradona has been axed as Argentina coach after the Argentina Football Association decided not to renew his contract.

The former Argentina captain's future as coach has been the subject of intense speculation ever since Argentina's elimination from the World Cup earlier this summer.


The 49-year-old suggested he would step down following the World Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Germany in South Africa this summer.
But he has since admitted he would be prepared to stay on, provided he can retain his full backroom staff, which may prove to be a sticking point.

Plane crashes in Pakistan capital

A plane with more than 150 people on board has crashed in hills north of the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
Officials said five bodies had been recovered and at least three injured people had been taken to hospital.
Police said it was an Airblue flight to Islamabad from Karachi.

The plane came down in the Margalla Hills to the north of the capital, and Pakistani television showed images of smoke and flames on a foggy hillside, with helicopters flying overhead.
A huge rescue effort has been launched.
The plane, reported to be an Airbus 321 with 146 passengers and six crew on board, is thought to have left Karachi at 0750 (0350 GMT). Officials said it lost contact with the control tower minutes before landing.

Diego Maradona states terms to stay as Argentina boss

Diego Maradona wants to continue as Argentina coach - but only if he can keep his entire backroom staff.

Argentine Football Association president Julio Grondona hopes the 49-year-old will sign a new four-year deal and the pair will meet on Monday.
But Grondona has criticised one of Maradona's assistants, former Argentina defender Oscar Ruggeri.

"If they touch a hair of one of my guys, even if it's the masseur or the kitman, I'm going," insisted Maradona.
"I really want to stay, but it depends on Grondona," the Argentina coach added in an interview with El Show del Futbol on America TV.
"I want to continue the adventure but not with [just] anyone. I chose these people. I want to continue working with them.
"I already asked, and I will continue to ask, that Ruggeri joins me. It's a constant struggle. This is the first thing I will discuss with Grondona."
